Synopsis on research programme in Nephrology

The Turin Center is located in the newly constituted hospital network “Città della Salute e della Scienza” which is the largest Hospital Complex in Italy.

The clinical work of this Center is dedicated to Pediatric Nephrology (it is one of the five pediatric nephrology centers in the country),  acting as a tertiary center for diagnosis and treatment of difficult cases. Genetic diagnosis and US guided kidney biopsy are offered. The Center covers the need for dialysis and transplantation for all the children of the Region of 5.000.000 inhabitants. Haemodialysis and any type of extracorporeal dialysis and peritoneal dialysis are carried out in patients of all ages, even newborns and infants,  affected by acute or chronic renal failure. Since 2000 a children kidney transplant center is active and transplanted patients are followed-up.

For over 20 years clinical and research fellows from Italy, Serbia, Iran, China have visited us and have been trained in our Center.

The research activity

Research is carried out with particular focus on the pathogenesis and immunological background of IgA nephropathy, nephrotic syndrome due to minimal change or focal sclerosing glomerulonephritis, lupus nephritis and other immune-mediated glomerulonephritis.

Fields of ongoing researches in the IgA nephropathy area

  • The Center is chairing an ERA-EDTA supported study on validation of the Oxford Classification of IgAN study (VALIGA)  which has involved 55 centers from 13 countries and enrolled a total of 1178 patients. Aim of this report is to validate the classical clinical risk factors for progression in this large cohort of patients with IgAN.
  • Immunoproteasome in primary IgAN, and  Henoch-Schoenlein purpura nephritis (HSP IgAN)
  • Toll-like receptors in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of primary IgAN, and  HSP IgAN): role of innate immunity.
  • T reg and Th17 in immune mediated glomerular diseases: recent focus on IDO activation
